Greetings from Spirit Water Inn on the western shore of Devils Lake. We are weathering a January cold snap that tests the grit of North Dakotans. As much as we complain about the frigid temps, we know it only lasts a while and we know it is making the ice good and thick for the fishermen.
People are driving on the lake in pretty much all areas. There are plowed roads to follow in many areas. Expect 24-28” of ice. I haven’t heard of anyone needing an extension for their auger yet.
Latest hot spots close to the resort include the golden highway, 1 mile and 3 mile humps off the Minnewaukan boat landing, Winchester Island and culverts by old 281. Anglers have had good luck by the Towers, Hog Bay and North 6-Mile Bay.
If you are targeting perch, stay in water 30 ft or deeper. Walleyes are biting on minnows with a gold rattle bait. Northern have been fun to catch on tip-ups with smelt or herring.
